Back in the fall of 2018, at the WBC Congress held in Kyiv, Elite Boxing Promotion and the World Boxing Council reached a mutual agreement that Viktor Postol should face French boxer Mohamed Mimoune, who was ranked close to Viktor, in a bout for the right to challenge for the championship belt. Postol completely outboxed his opponent and, as a result, celebrated a victory by unanimous decision. This fight opened the way for Viktor to compete for the WBC championship title.

As you know, the championship fight was postponed twice. Finally, on August 29, it took place at The Bubble arena in Las Vegas. The third training camp was the most difficult for Viktor, which is not surprising given all the postponements, dozens of hours spent on planes, changes of time zones, and demanding training camps.
The fight itself was very entertaining to watch. From the second round, Postol found his distance, landed his jab well and essentially did what his corner expected of him — kept his opponent at a distance that worked to his advantage, thanks to his physical attributes. When his opponent closed the distance, he either clinched or moved away on his feet. Overall, he followed the game plan.

Ramirez was unable to outplay the Ukrainian tactically, and ultimately never managed to do so. Holding off the relentless pressure of a bull like Ramirez is extremely difficult and takes a tremendous amount of energy, which, unfortunately, fighters gradually lose as the fight progresses. Viktor was already 36, and not every fighter in his weight class could maintain the pace he did throughout the fight, while his work rate remained quite high.

Only a judge looking the other way could have given the 12th round to Ramirez — and apparently, so did the three judges officiating the fight. As a result, Ramirez won by majority decision: one judge scored the fight a draw, another gave Ramirez a two-point advantage, while the third somehow came up with a difficult-to-comprehend score of 116–112.
With this fight, Postol proved that he is still in the mix, that he remains among the top fighters, and silenced the skeptics and those who had predicted Viktor’s “retirement.”
